A lengthy survey about organic and locally raised foods was done by an NPR radio show, The Splendid Table. Some interesting take aways from the survey:
- Most consumers overwhelmingly thought food should be even more regulated. I have a strong opinion: that's going to make it even harder for new food trends to make it into the grocery store.
- What's quite fascinating is the complete lack of knowledge about the most important (sleep-inducing) issues in farming (in the West for sure), water. And in ranching, the amount of energy required to bring a herd to market.
- The prices for organic can only be -slightly- higher than the non-organic alternative. In most cases, this borders on the absurd considering the amount of fillers in mass-produced food. The unintended consequence will be organic foods will quickly become just as heavily processed as the non-organic versions they replace.
- The classic consumer behaviors haven't changed. The store has to be close by and consumers drive there once a week as part of running other errands.
