Urban Produce

Fallenfruit.org is an excellent website highlighting mixed uses in urban settings. It offers a few detailed maps fruit bearing trees that grow into public spaces and will publish more if they are sent in.

The project puts into context a relatively new idea for Angelenos, expanding the use of urban public spaces. (manifesto page) I will leave the issue of harvesting the fruit alone because most people will have an opinion one way or another that is sure to start a flame fest.

The site design and font selection is a little unorthodox, so some selected quotes are offered below.

How to eat fruit -Ask residents permission. Be friendly! Talk to people! Say hello! (sic) This is perhaps the most important tip for all urbanites. Get to know your neighbors. You don't have to be BFF, but know their names and talk about neighborhood stuff...

Mapping tips - "If the trees are not pruned and maintained, the fruit will not be edible." Hint for fruit tree owners, you need to pay a little attention to your trees throughout the year. Great fruit boils down to a little pruning, some water and fertilizer for your tree throughout the year.
