1/2 of American's Breakfast is Sugar

node/%

Everyone knows Americans eat a whole lot of sugar. Sugar is one of the culprits that provides *lots* of empty calories. Yahoo! has a great story on just how much:

* 11 popular cereals have more sugar than a glazed doughnut.
* A few cereals have half or more of their weight is sugar.

What's especially destructive about the story is the bit of propaganda on the end of story claiming yogurt having as much or more sugar. That would be comparing "Frankenstein's monster yogurt" that is produced by many dairy product companies including Horizon's Organic looks-like-yogurt product with an actual yogurt made with milk and a little bacteria.

Winners in the category of a decent breakfast cereal were Cheerios and Life. For the smart shopper, buying Joe's O's should be your first choice. Trader Joe's also carries large boxes of Barbara's cereals at lower prices/oz than most grocery stores. Trader Joe's also carries some sugar-rific cereals, so choose carefully.
